چکیده

A survey of ligand eld theory is given and the possibility of ob serving the Jahn Teller e ect in molecules by means of gas phase elec tron di raction is discussed The theory of the dynamic Jahn Teller e ect is outlined and theoretical and experimental results for VCl are reviewed In H A Jahn and E Teller predicted that a nonlinear molecule which is in a degenerate state will seek to change its structure in order to remove as much of the degeneracy as possible It has however proven to be very di cult to demonstrate this e ect experimentally Van Vleck expressed it this way It is a great merit of the J T e ect that it disappears when not needed But as Ballhausen states in his book the e ect is very di cult to nd when one does wish to demonstrate it As we shall see Jahn Teller e ects are expected in a series of octahedral and tetrahedral complexes these complexes should therefore not have a regular octahedral or tetrahedral structure It is indeed found from x ray di raction studies that such molecules are distorted It cannot however be immediately concluded that these distortions are caused by the Jahn Teller e ect In a crystal lattice one must take account of the intermolecular forces and van Vleck as long ago as pointed out that such forces can lead to completely equivalent distortions It is therefore tempting to study molecules in the gas phase by means of for example electron di raction Structural Studies by Electron Di raction Electron di raction methods are described in for example ref The experiment consists of a beam of electrons colliding with a beam of gas molecules and the scattering pattern being recorded on a photographic plate An experimental intensity curve is obtained which can be compared with the theoretical expression

Jahn-Teller Coupling in the X̃ E Ground States of the CF3O and CF3S Radicals

The Jahn-Teller and spin-orbit coupling in the ground states of the CF3O and CF3S radicals have been investigated experimentally by dispersed fluorescence spectroscopy. These spectra are analyzed using a theoretical model that simultaneously includes spin-orbit coupling and multimode Jahn-Teller, both linear and quadratic. We find that in each of these radicals a moderate linear Jahn-Teller eff...

A Computational Study to Find the Vibrational Modes Connected with Specific Molecular Structures of Calculated Compound

The purpose of this research is to provide a deeper understanding of the planar high- symmetry configuration instability. In the ideal case, the distortion corresponds to the movements of nuclei along normal modes that belong to non-totally symmetric irreps of the high symmertry (HS) point group of molecule. The analysis of the structural distortion from the HS nuclear arrangements of the JT ac...

Review of “Theoretical Analysis of the Jahn-Teller (JT) Distort

This paper clearly defines the problem to be discussed: if the distortion from the tetrahedral to D2d is caused by Jahn Teller. The introduction explains the reason for the assumption of Jahn Teller distortion using solid rational. The introduction for the possibility that this effect could be due to other factors is also involved in the introduction along with some compelling rationale to argu...

Electron Correlation and Jahn-teller Interaction in Manganese Oxides Typeset Using Revt E X

The interplay between the electron repulsion U and the Jahn-Teller electron-phonon interation E LR is studied with a large d model for the ferromag-netic state of the manganese oxides. These two interactions collaborate to induce the local isospin (orbital) moments and reduce the bandwidth B. Especially the retardation eeect of the Jahn-Teller phonon with the frequency is eeective to reduce B, ...

New insights into the Jahn – Teller effect in NO 3 via the dark à 2 E ′ ′ state

The recent cavity ringdown (CRD) measurement of the forbidden à 2E ← X̃ A2 transition of the nitrate radical NO3 reveals a rich, well-resolved spectrum in the near-infrared. The spectroscopic detail provides a new window onto the Jahn–Teller (JT) and pseudo-Jahn–Teller (PJT) effects in NO3. This paper reviews the current experimental evidence for vibronic coupling in the à state and discusses th...
